Connecting Employers and Young Job Seekers

On May 7, 2020, 100,000 Opportunities Initiative and Get Schooled joined nine employers and four program providers to make 150,000 open entry-level jobs available to nearly 50,000 interested young job seekers amid skyrocketing COVID-19 job losses. We moved our job fair and career prep platform exclusively online to respond to the challenges of 2020 – connecting nearly 5,000 young people to the resources and support they need to succeed in a rapidly changing economic environment.

Our Impact

With 4,582 people participating in the National Youth Hiring Day job fair, 2,584 “apply for this job” application referrals, and 538 resumes reviewed we were able to equip youth with more access, support and resources that better prepare them in their job search during this time of economic uncertainty.

But you don’t need to take our word for it — with 6,107 chat messages and 26,741 total booth visits, see what the participants had to say about the hiring fair themselves:

Looking for Employment?

In the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, millions of Americans have newly filed for unemployment. These astounding job losses compound the reality that more than 4.5 million “Opportunity Youth” — young people 16-24 who are out of school and unemployed — were already disconnected from the economy prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The spread of the virus disproportionately impacts these youth and their communities. While National Youth Hiring Day does not guarantee employment for participants, 100,000 Opportunities Initiative and Get Schooled aim to equip youth with more access, support and resources that will better prepare them in their job search during this time of economic uncertainty.

About the NYHD Team

The 100,000 Opportunities Initiative — a national coalition of more than 50 world-class employers, including Starbucks, Walmart, FedEx, Hyatt, Nordstrom, T-Mobile and LinkedIn, all dedicated to employing and empowering Opportunity Youth — has been pioneering new virtual hiring strategies to help young job seekers get hired and jump start their careers. We’ve already met our first goal of ensuring 100,000 opportunity youth got hired and were supported to succeed. We’re now on track to ensure one million opportunity youth are hired by 2025. Get Schooled is a national nonprofit helping young people thrive in high school, college, and early career jobs.
